Even An "Expert" Can Make A Mistake

posted Wednesday, 17 September 2008

Well, I'm not actually an expert, but I do study time management.  In fact, I teach time management to my coaching clients.  One of the best ways to master something that you are not good at is to teach it to someone else.

Now I know that the top two time wasters are not being able to find your keys and your wallet.  I have been a real pro at not finding my keys my whole life.  But that has stopped, finally!  There is one spot on a particular table by my front door where I put my keys.  When I am ready to leave I always know where my keys will be.

Part of being organized is having a tidy car.  I also have had a problem with this.   It wasn't that long ago that I had my car completely clutter free.  And it didn't take that long for the clutter to reappear.

It was time for me to have my car clutter free again so last night I spent some time going through the papers, keeping what I want and throwing out the rest.  It felt great to have it clean again.

This morning I was getting ready to leave for work.  I went to grab the keys from the reliable spot where I always leave them.  They were not there.  I looked all over the house and couldn't find them.  I was starting to panic because I had to be at work at 8 a.m. and if I didn't leave that second I would be late.  The company that I work for considers it a crime if you are late.

After not finding the keys anywhere, I had this sick feeling that I locked them in the car.  I do have an extra set of keys but could not find them.  I had to call the roadside assistance that I fortunately have with my car insurance.  After waiting over an hour for the guy to come, he got the door open and there were my keys.

I realize that this story is not really unusual.  People lock the keys in their car all the time.  But what is interesting to me is the conversation that I had with the locksmith.  I was telling him how I felt silly that this happened and how I teach people how to avoid this.  He told me something that shocked me.  Last week he locked HIS keys in his car TWO times!  I said that at least it's easy for him to get the door open.  When that happeded he had all of his tools inside his car and he had to call his partner to get his door open.

So I didn't feel quite so bad after that.  However, I was almost three hours late to work of which I had to use my vacation time.  And I missed taking my lunch hour that day.

I now am extra careful so that this does not happen again.  And I am going to make a couple of extra sets of keys.  To look on the bright side, I feel fortunate that I was at home when this happened instead of being deserted somewhere.

I am a Wellness Coach and time management is a part of my coaching.  Time management affects every aspect of your life.  If you master time management your life will be so much easier.
