Parents, Are You Getting Through To Your Kids?

posted Wednesday, 7 October 2009
When it comes to helping teens make wise choices about drugs, alcohol and sexual activity, parents wield more power than they think, according to Stephen Wallace, author of Reality Gap: Alcohol, Drugs and Sex - What Parents Don't Know and Teens Aren't Telling.

Wallace says that kids are more likely to make good choices if you establish expectations and enforce consequences.  He shares these tips to help your teens make good decisions:

Start talking about tough topics in elementary school.  "The average age for kids to start drinking is 13," Wallace says.  "If you wait until high school, you're less likely to gain traction."

Weave sensitive subjects into casual dinner or car conversations when teens are more receptive.  It's more effective that on official "big talk."

Portray teen behavior accurately.  While a survey conducted by SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) shows about 32 percent of 7th to 12th graders have used drugs, teens are likely to believe the percentage is much higher.  This is a dangerous perspective for teens prone to peer pressure.  It also means there are plenty of other kids they can hand out with.

Arm teens with strategies.  Wallace says to provide them with a plan or things to say to extricate themselves from unhealthy situations.  The more they practice responses, the more likely they'll make a good decision at crunch time.

As someone with teenage children, I can relate to what Stephen Wallace is saying.  I know that peer pressure is very difficult, and I am very fortunate that my children have remained strong in that area.  For those of you who have younger children, I urge you to start talking to your children, this is one important area that you do not want to put off.
