Sometimes One Product That Makes You Well Can Make You Sick

posted Tuesday, 10 November 2009
My daughter has been sick, diagnosed  as having the flu by her doctor.  In less than one week, she has gone through 16 boxes of tissues, and has felt fairly miserable.  She had been up throughout the nights and desperately needed sleep.  So she requested that I get her Tylenol PM.  I wanted her to be able to get a good nights sleep, so I bought it for her.

When I gave it to her, she looked at the ingredients on the box and told me that I was not going to want her to take it because there was two different parabens in the product.  I was so proud of her for checking the ingredients on her own.  That was something that I should have done myself.

There are not many seventeen year olds who would look at the ingredients on a package, and know or care if they are harmful. It's important that we teach our children to do this.

My daughter actually was correct. I looked at the box and saw that butylparaben and methylparaben are in this product. Parabens are usually the last ingredient, but butylparaben was the third ingredient!

There are four different parabens:

Butylparaben, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, and Propylparaben.  Parabens are a class of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.    Potential breast cancer risk and endocrine disruptor raising concern for impaired fertility or development, increased risk for certain cancers, itching burning and blistering of skin.  Commonly found in body products.  There is much research on parabens.  I encourage you to research this yourself.

Something about this does not add up.  You're sick and trying to get well.  So by trying to get well, you are putting toxic ingredients in your body.

If you are aware of this, you can find products like deodorant and shampoo, etc. that say paraben free.  It's easy to find these in a health food store.

I usually do not mention brand names of products, but this time I thought that it was worth mentioning.  If anyone reading this works for the Tylenol Company, I am only mentioning facts about the ingredients that are on the box.

This is the season when many people get sick.  You are exposed to a lot of people, but we must do what we can to stay healthy and well.  Do a few simple things such as drink close to eight glasses of pure water and wash your hands often.  Get plenty of rest and avoid touching your face, especially your eyes and mouth.

Let's all stay well so we don't need to take medicine or over the counter drugs.  Of course, always consult your health care provider if you are not well.
