Don't Always Have Faith In What Your Doctor Tells You

posted Monday, 11 August 2008

It is so easy to believe what your doctor says, after all, your doctor went to medical school.  Your doctor is an authority figure.  It is so easy to fall into the trap of thinking your doctor knows everything.  I know better and I just fell into this trap.

There are probably hundreds of dentists in the area where I live.  However, I drive a good hour to go to a particular holistic dentist.  I just went to him this week.  It was a lot of trouble not just because of the distance but I had to use five hours of sick time taking off from work.  Not only that, but I almost got into a fatal car accident.

I recently got a toll tag for my car which was long past due.  Now that I have it I don't know how I got along without it in the past.  There is an easier way for me to get to this dentist but I am not familiar with that area and go the long way which is through the DFW airport.

When I got the toll tag they didn't tell me that you can't use it at the toll booth in the airport.  So when I came to the toll booth I went where the sign said toll tag.  Only when I was going through the arm stayed down.  Luckily it was padded and I slammed on my breaks as the arm touched my front window.  Everything was OK.

I told myself this was worth it because I really like this dentist and I only go twice a year. He does great work and he and his staff are wonderful.  And he is a holistic dentist.  People all over the country come to him.  I do feel fortunate that he is in Dallas where I live.

He recommended that I get this product from him that is a topical paste with bio-available calcium and phosphate.  I bought it with the faith that he recommended it so it must not have anything harmful in it.

The mistake that I made was not reading the ingredients before I bought it.  I can't believe that I didn't do that and waited until I got home.

I'm going to talk about two of the ingredients, proplene glycol and zinc oxide.

PROPLENE GLYCOL - Called a humectant in cosmetics, it really is "industrial anti-freeze" and the major ingredient in brake and hydraulic fluid.  Tests show it can be a strong skin irritant.  Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on Propylend Glycol warn to avoid skin contact as it is systemic and can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.  Absorbed into blood stream and travels to all organs.   It alters cell membranes and causes cardiac arrest.  It is found in shaving gel, lotions, shampoo, conditioners, foods, deodorant.

ZINC OXIDE - May cause skin irritation.  May be harmful if absorbed through the skin and may cause eye irritation.  Harmful if inhaled.  Material may be irritating to mucus membranes and upper respiratory tract.

Zinc oxide dust or fume can irritate the respiratory tract.  Prolonged skin contact can produce a severe dermatitus called oxide pox.  Exposure to high levels of dust or fume can cause metallic taste, marked thirst, caughing, fatigue, weakness muscular pain, and nausea followed by fever and chills.  Severe overexposure may result in bronchitis or pneumonia with a bluish tint to the skin.  Prolonged exposure can cause reversible liver enzyme abnormalities.  Diarrhea, peptic ulceration and gastrointestinal hemorrhage may also occur.

These are just two ingredients.  It also has other harmful ingredients like sodium saccharin.  Saccharin is the toxic artificial sweetener.  There are others but even with just these alone, I certainly do not want to put them in my mouth.

So it looks like the moral of the story is you should not assume that a product is safe solely based on who tells you about it, even if it is a holistic doctor.  ALWAYS read the labels and become familiar with ingredients.  Don't think that a particular product is the only one out there.  There are plenty of pure, natural, safe products - you just have to look for them.

I actually have been seeking out safe and natural health and skin care products.  I found them with the Amazon Herb Co.  You can't get anything more pure than Rainforest botanicals.

I do use all of the products myself and I can say that they are the best of the best.  I was so happy to find skin care products without any harmful ingredients and cleansing teas and healthy chocolates.

See all of the products at www.MagicoftheRainforest.amazonherb.net.   You can order them directly on the website or email me at bleynor@gmail.com or leave a message for me at 972-618-3446.
