Barbara's February Health & Wellness Tip

posted Monday, 1 February 2010

Barbara’s February Health & Wellness Tip: If you regularly consume fish, fruit, and vegetables, you reduce your chances of suffering from depression.

Research shows this.  In fact, a study in the British Journal of Psychiatry is reporting this. The researchers say that a diet of processed meats, sweetened desserts, fried foods, refined cereals, and high-fat dairy products "seems to be deleterious for depression."

The study showed an association between diet and depression-which doesn't mean that a bad diet causes depression.  The question is what might be providing the protection for mental health?  The researchers came up with  several possibilities.  It may be the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables, thought to protect cells from damage; the folic acid in leafy greens, which affects brain tissue; or the omega-3 fatty acids in fish, present in certain brain membranes.
