Barbara's December Health & Wellness Tip is: Eat fish that only have fins and scales.
Wild, freshwater/ocean-caught fish is best, while farm-raised fish are best avoided since their fatty acid profile is not as good as that of wild fish. Make sure the fish have fins and scales such as cod, halibut, grouper, salmon, and tuna. Wild fish, deep-sea oily fish such as salmon and tuna are also good sources of omega-3 fatty acids. They are able to swim freely and feed on a natural diet of marine-algae. Farmed fish are cooped up in pens with thousands of other fish and they are usually given inappropriate feed, such as soy pellets containing pesticide residues.
All wild fish are excellent sources of macro and trace minerals, particularly zinc and iodine. Mackerel, anchovies and herring are especially rich in mineral nutrients.
Shellfish should be avoided such as clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, snails, shrimp, lobsters, and crabs. They are the "bottom feeders" and scavengers, and are filters of toxins.
